Education Questions

Q. How can I earn the GREEN designation and when is it awarded?

A. REALTORS® can earn NAR's Green Designation by completing the following three obejctives: Take and pass the 2-day Green Designation Course, take and pass one of three one-day Elective courses, and submit the GREEN Application Form to the GREEN RESOURCE COUNCIL along with proof of completion of your elective course. After the application is approved by the Green Resource Council, you will be notified by the council when you have achieved NAR's Green Designation.

Q. What are the elective course topics?

A. Elective course topics include Residential Real Estate, Commercial Real Estate, and Property Management. You can take as many of the elective courses as you like, but you are only required to complete one to earn NAR's Green Designation.

Q. I've completed my Core Course and elective course. When can I gain access to the member service portion of GreenResourceCouncil.org and begin marketing?

A. You may only call yourself a NAR Green Designee and use NAR's Green Designation when you have been informed by the Green Resource Council that your application has been approved and you have been awarded NAR's Green Designation. You will then receive login information for the member services portion of the website, which contains marketing materials, the latest news and information, and a network of the Designees.

Q. Do NAR's Green Designation courses count toward continuing education credit?

A. No, the courses are not approved for continuing education credit in Wisconsin.

Q. I have substantial education and/or experience in green real estate and green building. Can I test out of all educational requirements of NAR's Green Designation?

A. It is not possible to test out of all the educational requirements of the program. NAR guarantees that everyone who earns NAR's Green Designation and distinguishes themselves as a NAR Green Designee has the same core education from NAR. It is therefore essential that all students complete course training approved by NAR.

Q. What are the requirements to maintain NAR's Green Designation after earning it?

A. Designees must be members (and maintain membership) in the NATIONAL ASSOCIATION OF REALTORS® either as a REALTOR® member or Institute Affiliate member, as well as members of the Green Resource Council.

Q. How much are the annual dues for the Green Resource Council?

A. New Designees receive a free one-year membership in the Green Resource Council. After the first year, annual dues are $99.

Q. Why would I want to earn the GREEN designation?

A. NAR's GREEN Designation is not a fad. Green real estate is altering fundamental market dynamics. Studies show that two-thirds' of consumers are paying attention to green homes and buildings; they recognize the link between green properties, cost savings and healthy living.

Q. I earned my GREEN in one state, but am now preparing to be licensed in another. Is my GREEN still valid?

A. Yes, once you have earned the GREEN, all other states will recognize it.

Q. I noticed that my GREEN designation does not appear in NRDS. How do I get this to appear?

A. Please contact the Green Resource Council at 800-498-9422 or email them at greendesignation@realtors.org

Q. I have earned the GREEN designation, but am planning to disaffiliate from the REALTORSŪ organization. May I still use the designation on my business card and marketing materials?

A. No. In order to use the GREEN designation mark, you must be a member in good standing with the National Association of REALTORSŪ as well as a member of the Green Resource Council.

Q. Does NAR recognize any other certification or designation programs related to green properties and practices?

A. NAR's GREEN Designation is the only one of its kind for real estate agents and property managers recognized by the National Association of REALTORS.
