WRA Launches Comprehensive Ad Campaign On
Shoreland Zoning Changes
by Tom Larson
In an effort to solicit public input on the proposed changes to the
state's shoreland zoning regulations, the WRA and the Wisconsin
Builders Association have engaged in an extensive statewide,
newspaper-ad campaign. The ads have been targeted in the areas
surrounding the 8 communities where the public listening sessions are
to be held (Spooner, Lake Tomahawk, Eau Claire, Onalaska, Grand Chute,
Crivitz, Madison, and Waukesha). The ads are intended to inform people
that the hearings are taking place, give some examples of some of the
options being proposed, and encourage people to attend. Because public
listening sessions are one of the first steps in the rulemaking
process and no formal draft of the rule has been prepared, public
input at this point is extremely important.
The WRA has been an active part of the DNR's Shoreland Advisory
Committee that helped develop the preliminary recommendations that are
being presented at the public listening sessions. The preliminary
recommendations contain a range of options from which the public can
choose their preference. Because these are preliminary recommendations
designed to obtain feedback from the public, the WRA has not taken a
position on the package of recommendations. The recommendations
contain some proposals that we support, others that we don't. We do,
however, support the process that the DNR is going through in revising
the rules and are thankful to be part of it.
A copy of the preliminary recommendations can be found on our Web
site at www.wra.org. Also, if you are unable to attend one of the
listening sessions, a simple written form can be completed and
submitted to the DNR with your comments. The form can also be found on
the WRA's Web site at www.wra.org.
If you have any questions or comments about the proposed revisions
to the state's shoreland zoning regulations, please contact
Tom Larson at (608) 240-8254.
