Madison - Governor Jim Doyle announced $7.2 million in
grants today to 23 local units of government and local-housing
organizations to help Wisconsin families obtain affordable
housing.
“My ‘Grow Wisconsin’ Initiative calls for investing in community
infrastructure,” Governor Doyle said. “These grants provide
homeownership opportunities throughout Wisconsin, strengthen
local partnerships, and help ensure decent, affordable housing
for homeowners and renters.”
Governor Doyle said the grants would enable more than 700
families to become homeowners and will provide rental assistance
to more than 2,000 households.
The Department of Commerce administers Housing Cost Reduction
Initiative (HCRI) funding, which provides acquisition assistance
to households purchasing a home. The funds also provide rental
assistance for families faced with short-term economic crises
and foreclosure assistance to homeowners in danger of losing
their home. Commerce also administers Federal HOME funding,
which provides down payment and closing cost assistance for
families purchasing a home. HOME funds also provide
rehabilitation funds for households that are purchasing a new
home or construction funds for households building a new home.
