Homeowner & Contractor Lead-Safe Work Practices

All persons should follow safety precautions and use appropriate methodology when working with LBP.

For information about the proper procedures and safety precautions for interim control measures (and for remodeling), see HUD's "Lead Paint Safety: A Field Guide for Painting, Home Maintenance, and Renovation Work," which can be downloaded from the link.

Also helpful is the EPA's booklet entitled "Renovating, repairing or painting a home, child care facility or school containing lead-based paint," which may be downloaded from the link, or obtained by calling 1-800-424-LEAD.

To obtain additional EPA consumer booklets and brochures regarding LBP in the home, go to www.epa.gov/lead/leadpbed.htm.

  Wisconsin Lead Page

The Wisconsin Lead Page is a virtual index to all of the LBP resources tied to the Wisconsin Department of Health & Family Service. This includes LBP labs, certification requirements, registry procedures, forms, training and certification for personnel, WALDO, etc.: dhfs.wisconsin.gov/lead/index.htm.

Federal LBP Pre-Renovations Disclosure Rule (Contractors, Remodeling, etc.)

Certified personnel are not mandated for interim control activities, renovation, remodeling, landscaping, or other activities that are designed solely to repair, restore or remodel a structure or dwelling, and not intended for permanent LBP hazard elimination. Also any other general operations and maintenance activities designed to temporarily reduce LBP hazards will also not require certified personnel. Persons engaging in these activities, however, may be required to comply with the federal LBP Renovations.

For information about the federal LBP Pre-Renovations Disclosure Rule, see pages 6-7 of Legal Update 99.08 and 00.04 , or visit www.epa.gov. This EPA Web page gives links to "The Lead-Based Paint Pre-Renovation Education Rule - a handbook for Contractors, Property Managers, and Maintenance Personnel," EPA/HUD Interpretative Guidance, and other excellent resources for contractors, owners, and property managers.
