WRA Legislative Alert: Mega Bucks

 June 08, 2016

$80 million: that's the total state contribution to the new Milwaukee Bucks Sports and Entertainment Arena. $80 million is a lot of money. From a real estate prospective, the big question is this: what kind of return on their investment can Wisconsin and Milwaukee County taxpayers expect from this new $1 billion economic development project? The answer is quite a bit. According to the Milwaukee Metropolitan Association of Commerce (MMAC), the new Milwaukee Bucks Arena project will benefit Wisconsin in a number of ways.

Project details

  • For every dollar the state invests, state taxpayers get a $3 return through income tax revenue.¬†
  • The project will create approximately 15,000 jobs related to the arena and surrounding development.¬†
  • State income tax revenue from the Bucks and visiting players is projected to grow to more than $400 million over the next 20 years.¬†
  • The Bucks are required to pay back the public investment if the team leaves the state for any reason.
  • The plan funds the arena with no new state or local taxes or state borrowing.

Bill status

SB 209 was signed into law by Gov. Walker in August 2015.
