Chairman's Corner with Peter Sveum: Are You the Most Valuable Professional?

 October 11, 2017

Thank you, thank you for the opportunity to serve as 2017-18 chairman of the Wisconsin REALTORS¬ģ Association. I very much appreciate your thoughts, support and consideration.

I hope that you were able to attend the 2017 WRA annual convention. Staged in Milwaukee for the first time in more than 15 years, the convention was a success, as usual. The 1,200-plus members who did attend enjoyed countless educational and networking opportunities and, of course, plenty of fun!

I learned this year about the incredible amount of time, energy and emotion invested by WRA staff Kristi Mikalsen, Michelle Harrison and Carter Angelo over the nine months leading up to the annual event. Sincere thanks go to each of them as well as to convention committee chair Patty Libke and her committee members.

Many thanks also go to outgoing WRA chairman Erik Sjowall for his service during the past year. His expertise and leadership were exemplary and will be missed as we move forward. I’m looking forward to working with chairman-elect Jean Stefaniak and treasurer Steve Beers as well as the balance of the executive committee members Mary Duff, Jeff Hoffman, Brad Lois and Michael Sewell and the entire WRA board of directors. I believe we have an excellent 2017-18 leadership team!

My year the WRA chairman is going to be busy. I am totally committed to searching for ways that we as an industry can improve. I would like all of our members to be MVPs, or most valuable professionals! Whether it be compliance with REEB rules and the NAR Code of Ethics or simple professional courtesies, I believe we can do better as an industry. Please watch for a membership survey and take a few minutes to respond ‚ÄĒ we‚Äôre sincerely interested in the level of practice standards that you are experiencing in your market. The results of the survey will provide guidance in creating a plan to improve. Let‚Äôs raise the bar in Wisconsin! Let‚Äôs all be MVPs!

We will also be exploring what more the WRA can do in our efforts to improve practice. While the WRA staff does so much for us with the WRA Legal Hotline, Legal Hottips, the Legal Update newsletter, the introduction of new forms and more, I think it would be interesting to explore just how much the staff knows about the challenges our members face every day in the listing and selling trenches.

Like many of you, for many years I have considered legislative advocacy to be our greatest member benefit. During the upcoming year, we will continue to stress the importance of each member supporting the WRA‚Äôs and NAR‚Äôs legislative initiatives by responding to Calls to Action ‚ÄĒ past WRA chairman K.C. Maurer emphasized this, and we need to build on his success.

Leadership believes that the Wisconsin REALTORS¬ģ Foundation (WRF) has the potential to do more for individuals in need. WRF chairman Mike Spranger and his committee will be working to identify ways to create a greater awareness of our foundation and to inject some energy and excitement.

So, you can see that we have a few things to work on! Fortunately we have a very talented and experienced president and CEO in Mike Theo as well as a dedicated WRA staff and leadership team, all committed to making the WRA the very best it can be.

I’m excited with what lies ahead and anxious to serve … with your help and support.
