Out-of-State License

If you hold an active nonmanaging real estate broker license in Illinois or Indiana, you're exempt from the Wisconsin education requirement and can take the sales exam directly. The original license in the reciprocal state must have been issued on the basis of passing the state’s examination.

Obtain a salesperson license by reciprocity:

1. Pass the Wisconsin salesperson exam administered by Pearson VUE. Need help prepping for the state licensing exam? Check out the WRA's mock exam, video review and other resources.

2. Submit your application to the Wisconsin Department of Safety and Professional Services. A complete application includes:

• • Form 3166, Application for Real Estate Salesperson license.
  • Evidence of passing the Wisconsin salesperson examination.
  • Submit copy of your certificate from Pearson VUE. 
  • Form 2688, Verification of Examination or Registration.
  • Completed by each state in which you have been issued a license. 
  • Evidence that you hold an active salesperson license in good standing, obtained by examination in Illinois or Indiana.
  • Form 813, Irrevocable Consent for Nonresident applicants.
    $60 reciprocal license fee.

If your Illinois or Indiana license is inactive but was active within the past two years, or you're an active real estate licensee in another state, you can apply to obtain a Wisconsin salesperson license by endorsement.  

Obtain a salesperson license by endorsement:

1. Fulfill one education requirement:

• • Complete 10 semester credits in real estate-related courses.
  • Complete the 13-hour Wisconsin Pre-license Course.

3. Submit your application to the Wisconsin Department of Safety and Professional Services.

Applicants applying for a Wisconsin sales license will need to show proof of their current license when submitting their application to the Wisconsin Department of Safety and Professional Services.

If you hold an active managing broker license in Illinois or Indiana, you're exempt from the Wisconsin education requirement and can take the broker exam directly. Prior to taking the Wisconsin exam, you must have a current license in good standing as a licensed managing broker in Illinois or Indiana. The original license in the reciprocal state must have been issued on the basis of passing the state’s examination.  

Obtain a broker license by reciprocity:

2. Submit your application to the Wisconsin Department of Safety and Professional Services

If your Illinois or Indiana broker license is inactive but was active within the past two years, or you're an active broker licensee in another state, you can apply to obtain a Wisconsin broker license by endorsement.  

Obtain a salesperson license by endorsement:

1. Fulfill one education requirement:

• • Complete 20 semester credits in real estate-related courses.
  • Complete the 6-hour Broker Course and the 13-hour Wisconsin Pre-license Sales Course. If you already hold a Wisconsin salesperson license, you do not need to retake the salesperson exam.
