License renewal tutorial

Wisconsin real estate licensees must renew their license with the Wisconsin Department of Safety and Professional Services (DSPS) on or before December 14, 2026, in order to maintain their license. The license renewal process takes place on the DSPS online renewal portal named LicensE. LicenseE opened in late October 2026 to allow Wisconsin real estate license renewals.

Renewal steps:

  1. Sign in to LicensE at license.wi.gov.

  2. Follow the steps in the DSPS renewal tutorial video as shown above.

  3. Having problems? See the DSPS credentialing and license FAQ.

  4. Principal brokers: If you also hold a business entity license, you must renew it separately. Each license uses its email address as its username, so your entity license is likely registered under a different email address than your individual license.

License renewal FAQs

What is the deadline for renewing a license?

The deadline for the 2025-26 biennium is December 14, 2026. Licensees must renew their license by December 14 of the even-numbered year in order to maintain their real estate license.

How much does it cost to renew my real estate salesperson license?

The cost for renewing a real estate license is $75.

Is my license renewed once I complete the CE courses?

No, taking your CE is not enough to renew your license. To maintain your license, you must complete the required CE and renew your license with the Wisconsin DSPS every two years by December 14 of the even-numbered year.

Can I renew my WRA membership to renew my license?

No. Renewing your license is separate from renewing your REALTOR® membership. You renew your license with the Wisconsin DSPS. You renew your membership with your local REALTOR® association.

My license has lapsed, how do I reactivate?

If your license is inactive and has been inactive for less than five years and you wish to renew your license, you must:

  1. Complete the previous biennium of CE.
  2. Pay the renewal fee.
  3. Pay the late fee.

Licensees who do not have an active license cannot practice real estate until the license is renewed.

How do I confirm that I renewed my license?

Check renewal status by using the DSPS license lookup feature.

How can I complete the CE requirements?

The WRA offers multiple education formats for CE:

  • On Demand CE, which is full online learning.
  • Self-study book, which includes a printed, hard-copy coursebook.
  • Attendance at select WRA events.
Why should I take my CE courses with the WRA?
  • Learn what matters to Wisconsin real estate professionals: WRA CE is developed by Wisconsin real estate legal experts with the Wisconsin-specific knowledge you need to stay current in your practice.

  • Prepare for 2027 practice changes: WRA CE courses include important information about Wisconsin real estate practice changes taking effect January 1, 2027. You’ll learn about new requirements affecting residential transactions and what they will mean for your day-to-day practice.

  • Complete it all in one place: Complete all 12 mandatory courses and six elective courses with the WRA. All WRA CE courses are approved and satisfy the Wisconsin Department of Safety and Professional Services (DSPS) CE requirements. Plus, when you complete all 18 hours with the WRA, your CE is automatically reported to the DSPS, making the renewal process a breeze.

I took my CE with another education provider. Does the WRA have those records?

No, the WRA does not have student records for coursework completed elsewhere. You must contact the other education provider to obtain your course certificates.

What if I need Minnesota CE credit?

The WRA no longer offers Dual License Wisconsin/Minnesota CE courses. For Minnesota CE credit, please check with a Minnesota-approved education provider. Wisconsin CE courses are still available from the WRA.

As a broker, where can I find out about the WRA's company CE options?

For more information, visit the company section of your WRA online profile.

Do I need to complete CE if I am newly licensed?

Most new licensees need to complete CE. Newly licensed salespersons who received their original real estate license after October 1 of the even year of the biennium are not required to complete CE for that biennium. However, all new broker licensees must complete CE. To verify, please check the expiration date on your DSPS issued license.

No. However, when you complete all 18 CE hours with the WRA, your completed coursework is automatically reported to the DSPS. The DSPS already has your CE credits on file when you visit the LicensE portal for your renewal, so there’s no manual entry of your CE information.

On the other hand, if you took CE courses with another education provider, you must contact that education provider to obtain your course completion certificates.
